"The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid? When evildoers assail me to eat up my flesh, my adversaries and foes, it is they who stumble and fall." – Psalm 27:1-2 ESV

Fear shows up in sports more than we like to admit. Sometimes it looks like nerves before a big game. Other times, it’s the fear of making a mistake, losing your spot, disappointing your coach, getting injured, or simply not being good enough. And the more something matters to us, the easier it can be to become afraid of losing it.

David understood fear. Psalm 27 wasn’t written by someone who had nothing to worry about. David knew what it was like to have real opposition and uncertainty surrounding him. Yet instead of pretending those threats didn’t exist, he reminded himself of something greater: who God was. The Lord was his light when he couldn’t see what was ahead, his salvation when he needed rescuing, and his stronghold when everything around him felt unstable.

That changes the way we think about courage. Biblical courage isn’t walking onto the field believing, “Nothing bad can happen to me.” Following Jesus doesn’t guarantee the win, the starting position, the scholarship, or a mistake-free performance. Courage is knowing that whatever happens, God remains who He said He is. Your confidence can rest somewhere deeper than the outcome.

Sometimes we give people and situations more power over us than they were ever supposed to have. One coach’s opinion can determine our mood. One bad performance can make us question our ability. One mistake can replay in our minds for days. We become afraid because we've allowed something temporary to become bigger in our minds than the God who holds our lives.

Psalm 27 invites us to shift our focus. David asks, “Whom shall I fear?” Not because there was nothing frightening around him, but because there was Someone greater with him.

So this week, compete freely. Prepare well, take the shot, make the play, and don't allow fear of failure to keep you from fully using what God has given you. And when fear does show up, don't pretend it isn't there. Bring it to God and remind yourself of what is true.

Your opponent isn't bigger than your God. Your mistake isn't bigger than His grace. Your uncertainty isn't bigger than His plan. And your future isn't outside of His hands.

You don't need to know exactly how everything will turn out to walk forward confidently.

You just need to know Who walks with you.

Prayer

Father, when fear starts controlling my thoughts, remind me of who You are. Be my light when I can't see what's ahead and my stronghold when life feels uncertain. Help me compete freely, trust You completely, and remember that my confidence isn't found in my performance or circumstances, but in You. In Jesus' name, Amen.
