Locked In – Psalm 16:8

Locked In – Psalm 16:8

Locked In – Psalm 16:8

"I keep my eyes always on the Lord. With Him at my right hand, I will not be shaken." – Psalm 16:8

Every athlete knows what it means to be locked in. When the game starts, everything else has to fade into the background. The crowd, the pressure, the last mistake, what somebody said about you—you can't give your attention to everything and still perform at your best. Where your focus goes matters.

The same is true spiritually. There are a lot of things competing for our attention every day. Social media. Other people's opinions. Expectations. Relationships. Stats. Playing time. The future. Even comparison with the athlete beside us. None of those things have to be bad on their own, but when they become the things we're constantly looking toward, it's easy for our attention to slowly drift away from God.

David says in Psalm 16:8, “I always let the LORD guide me. Because he is at my right hand, I will not be shaken.” His confidence wasn't coming from having a perfect situation. It came from where he chose to keep his attention. David knew that if God remained before him, everything happening around him didn't have to control what was happening within him.

That's important because being “locked in” with God doesn't mean ignoring reality. You're still going to have pressure. You might still have a bad game. Someone else may get the opportunity you wanted. You may have questions about your future that aren't answered yet. The difference is that those things don't get to become the center of your attention.

Sometimes we're asking God for peace while spending all day focused on the very things stealing it. We're praying for confidence while constantly comparing ourselves to somebody else. We're asking God to guide us while giving more attention to everyone else's voice than His.

At some point, we have to ask ourselves: What am I actually locked in on?

Because whatever consistently has your attention will eventually have influence over your heart.

Being locked in on God means intentionally bringing your attention back to Him. Before you check your phone, talk to Him. When anxiety starts building, return to what He's said. When comparison creeps in, remember what He's called you to do. When things don't go your way, don't let one moment shake an identity that's rooted in something much stronger.

You don't need fewer distractions around you to become more focused on God. You need to become intentional about what gets your attention.

So this week, lock in.

Not just on your training. Not just on your goals. Not just on becoming a better athlete.

Lock in on the One who gave you the ability to compete in the first place.

Because when your eyes stay fixed on Him, everything around you doesn't have the power to shake what's within you.

You can't stay locked in on God while being distracted by everything around you.

Prayer

Father, help me keep my attention on You. When comparison, pressure, fear, or distractions pull my focus away, bring me back to Your presence. Guide my decisions, steady my heart, and help me stay rooted in You no matter what's happening around me. In Jesus' name, Amen.
