"The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?" – Psalm 27:1 ESV
This week, let’s start with a bold question: What’s your greatest fear?
For some, it’s failure. For others, loneliness. Maybe even something as simple as the dark. But the truth is, fear doesn’t just show up out of nowhere—it often grows out of past trauma, lies we’ve believed, or even instinct. Left unchecked, fear can keep us stuck in darkness.
But here’s the good news: light always wins. And for us, that light isn’t temporary—it’s eternal. That light is God Himself.
When the psalmist declares, “The Lord is my light and my salvation,” it’s more than comfort—it’s a battle cry. Just like light overcomes darkness, God’s salvation crushes sin and evil. So when David asks, “Whom shall I fear?” it’s not a casual question—it’s a declaration of faith. It’s saying: Nothing stands against the power of my God.
The psalm goes further: God is “the stronghold of my life.” Notice the shift in language. Instead of just fear, the word afraid—or even timid in some translations—is used. Fear is a temporary emotion when danger shows up. But timidity? That’s a mindset. It’s living life in hesitation, doubt, and retreat.
This verse reminds us we’re called to more than momentary courage. In Christ, we’re freed not just from fear of the moment, but from a lifestyle of timidity. We walk boldly because our stronghold isn’t built on us—it’s built on Him.
What does this mean for us?
Don’t let fear choke out your faith. God has placed a calling on your life that goes beyond what human eyes can see, and the enemy will use every distraction he can to pull you away from it. But Scripture reminds us that God is our stronghold. That means His strength is not just something we admire—it’s something we depend on.
No matter how intimidating the obstacle looks, remember this: the giant in front of you is never bigger than the God who fights for you. He is alive. He is victorious. And because He reigns, you can walk forward in boldness, not timidity.
Prayer
Lord, thank You for being my light, my salvation, and my stronghold. Help me not to be paralyzed by fear or held back by timidity, but to walk boldly in the calling You’ve placed on my life. Remind me daily that no giant is greater than Your power, and no darkness can overcome Your light. Strengthen my faith this week so that my steps reflect Your victory. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
