"You also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect." – Luke 12:40 ESV
Readiness isn’t about panic—it’s about posture.
In Luke 12:40, Jesus isn’t trying to scare His followers into obedience; He’s calling them into intentional living. The warning isn’t rooted in fear, but in faithfulness. To be “ready” means your life is aligned even when no one is watching, applauding, or keeping score.
So often, we prepare for moments we expect: the big opportunity, the breakthrough, the win, the next season. But Jesus flips that mindset. He reminds us that the most important moments—the ones that matter eternally—often arrive unannounced. Readiness, then, isn’t about timing God. It’s about trusting Him enough to live faithfully now.
For the athlete, this looks like training with integrity even when the spotlight is off.
For the leader, it means serving well even when recognition doesn’t come.
For the believer, it means daily obedience—prayer, humility, discipline—long before results are visible.
Luke 12:40 challenges us to ask:
If God moved today, would my life show I was expecting Him?
Readiness is built in the ordinary. In the quiet faithfulness. In the unseen obedience. And when we live that way, we don’t fear the unexpected—we’re prepared for it.
Prayer
God,
Help us live ready—not anxious, not rushed, but aligned with You. Teach us to be faithful in the ordinary moments, to obey even when no one sees, and to trust You when the timing is unclear. Remove complacency from our hearts and replace it with expectancy. Shape our lives so that if You move today, our obedience would already be in motion. We don’t want to just believe in You—we want to live prepared for You. Amen.
