Strength in Waiting – Isaiah 40:31

Strength in Waiting – Isaiah 40:31

Strength in Waiting – Isaiah 40:31

“But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.” — Isaiah 40:31 (ESV)

Advent reminds us that God’s greatest movements often begin in seasons of waiting. Isaiah writes to a weary people—people whose hope felt stretched thin, whose strength seemed to leak faster than they could refill it. Yet into that exhaustion, God speaks a promise that is both gentle and bold: your renewal will not come from striving, but from trusting.

Biblical hope isn’t optimism or positive thinking; it’s anchored expectation. It is the decision to place your confidence in the character of God, even when life feels unpredictable. And Isaiah tells us what happens when we do:
God Himself becomes the source of our strength.

The image of an eagle is intentional. Eagles don’t escape storms—they ride them. They rise higher because of the winds that try to pull everything else down. In the same way, Advent reminds us that Jesus stepped into a stormed world, not to lift us out of reality, but to lift us above it through His presence.

And notice the progression: soar… run… walk.
It’s almost as if God is saying:

  • If you’re flying, I am with you.
  • If you’re running, I will fuel you.
  • If you’re walking, I will steady you.

Because the truth is, most of life isn’t soaring. It’s walking. It’s showing up on days when your strength feels borrowed. It’s trusting God in the slow, steady obedience of ordinary moments. And Isaiah tells us that even there, God renews.

Advent is a declaration that God comes close to the tired, the hopeful, the discouraged, and the faithful. Jesus’ birth is proof that God does not leave His people to navigate the weight of life alone. Hope came down. Strength wrapped itself in flesh. Light entered the waiting.

So wherever you find yourself this week—whether waiting with expectation or stumbling forward with empty strength—remember this promise:

You don’t have to manufacture your own renewal.
God is the One who lifts you.
God is the One who keeps you.
And hope in Him is never wasted.

Prayer

Father, in this season of Advent, teach me to place my hope in You and not in my own strength. Renew me in the places where I feel tired, stretched, or uncertain. Lift my perspective like the eagle You promised—help me rise above discouragement, fear, and the weight of everything I cannot control. Give me endurance for the things I must run toward and steady faith for the slow, ordinary steps I need to take. Remind me that You are near, that You see me, and that Your strength is enough for today. May my waiting produce trust, and may my hope rest fully in who You are. Amen.
