"The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction." – Proverbs 1:7 ESV
The people who grow the most in life aren’t always the most talented or the smartest—they’re the ones willing to listen and learn. Whether it’s an athlete taking coaching seriously, a student asking questions, or someone at work open to feedback, growth starts with being teachable.
Proverbs reminds us that true wisdom begins with the fear of the Lord—not fear as in being scared, but living with reverence and respect for God. It’s admitting, “I don’t have it all figured out, and I need His guidance.” That humility opens the door for real growth.
The opposite is pride. Our culture pushes us to act like we’ve got it all together, but Scripture calls that foolish. When we refuse instruction—from God, from His Word, or even from people He places in our lives—we miss out on the wisdom He wants to give us.
So here’s the question: Are you coachable in life? Or are you stubborn, shutting out correction? Living in the fear of the Lord doesn’t make you weaker—it makes you wiser. It shifts your perspective, helping you navigate wins, losses, challenges, and successes with clarity and peace.
And here’s the truth: being teachable isn’t just about receiving information—it’s about transformation. It’s letting God’s wisdom shape your character, your decisions, and even the way you respond when life doesn’t go your way. The most dangerous place to be is thinking you’ve “arrived.” The safest place is staying humble enough to keep learning from the One who knows it all.
Application
- Be teachable. Stay open to God’s voice and the lessons He sends your way.
- Check your pride. Don’t let the need to look like you “know it all” block real growth.
- Seek perspective. Invite God to shape how you see situations, so you can respond with wisdom.
Prayer
Lord, keep me from pride that blocks wisdom. Teach me to revere You, to stay coachable, and to listen when You speak. Give me a heart that trusts Your perspective above my own, so I can walk in true knowledge and represent You well. Amen.
