“ But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him. For the Lord sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.” — 1 Samuel 16:7 ESV

As an athlete, it can feel like you're constantly being evaluated.

Your height. Your speed. Your strength. Your stats. Your ranking. Your playing time. Your highlights. Your offers. There is always another number, comparison, or opinion telling you where you stand.

And after a while, it's easy to start seeing yourself the same way everyone else sees you.

But God sees different.

In 1 Samuel 16, Samuel was sent to anoint the next king of Israel. When he saw Eliab, he immediately thought, Surely this is the one. Eliab looked the part. But God told Samuel not to focus on his appearance or stature because God wasn't looking at what Samuel was looking at.

The person God chose was David—the younger brother who wasn't even initially brought into the room. Think about that.

David was overlooked by people but seen by God.

Maybe you know that feeling. Maybe someone else got the starting spot you worked for. Maybe you didn't receive the offer you expected. Maybe you feel undersized, underestimated, or unnoticed. Maybe you scroll through social media and wonder why someone else's journey seems to be moving faster than yours. When everyone around you seems to be measuring you by what they can see, remember: God's evaluation of you goes deeper.

He sees how you respond when you're overlooked. He sees whether you encourage the teammate playing ahead of you. He sees what you do when nobody is watching. He sees the private prayers, the quiet obedience, the integrity, the humility, and the character that will never appear on a stat sheet. And here's the other side of this verse: you can look successful on the outside and still be struggling on the inside.

You can have the starting position and an unhealthy heart. You can have the highlights and still be consumed by comparison. You can receive applause from thousands and still be living for their approval. 

So stop measuring your worth by somebody else's evaluation. You don't need to look like everyone else, perform like everyone else, or have someone else's journey.

God sees what they don't.

And what He is developing inside of you matters far more than what everyone is applauding around you.

Prayer

Father, help me see myself the way You see me. When I feel overlooked, compared, or defined by my performance, remind me that You look deeper. Examine my heart and shape me into someone who reflects Christ in both public and private. Help me pursue excellence without making performance my identity, and develop in me the character that matters to You. In Jesus' name, Amen.
