More Than A Game – Colossians 3:17

More Than A Game – Colossians 3:17

"And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him." – Colossians 3:17 ESV

As athletes, we're constantly reminded to represent something bigger than ourselves. Every time we put on a jersey, we're representing our team, our school, our coaches, and sometimes even our families. We're taught that how we carry ourselves matters because our actions reflect more than just who we are individually.

But as followers of Christ, there's something even greater we're called to represent.

In Colossians 3:17, Paul tells us that whatever we do, whether through our words or our actions, should be done in the name of Jesus. Notice that he doesn't say some things. He doesn't limit it to church, Bible study, or the moments when we're openly talking about our faith. He says whatever you do.

That includes how you compete, how you practice, how you respond to coaching, how you treat teammates, and how you handle both success and disappointment.

It's easy to say we play for God's glory when we're winning. It's easy to point toward heaven after a touchdown, put a Bible verse in our Instagram bio, or thank God during a postgame interview. And there's nothing wrong with any of those things. But representing Christ is about much more than the moments when everybody can see us.

That's where this verse becomes challenging.

Because sometimes we become so focused on performing well that we forget we're also called to live well. We spend hours developing our athletic abilities, studying our opponents, and preparing our bodies to compete, but how much attention are we giving to developing the character that represents Christ?

You can be the hardest worker on your team and still struggle to show humility. You can be the most talented athlete on the field and still fail to treat others with respect. You can have Scripture written across your gear and still allow your attitude to contradict the message you're wearing.

And that's something all of us have to examine.

The goal isn't simply to be known as a Christian athlete. It's to live in a way that makes Christ known.

Colossians 3:17 reminds us that following Jesus is a daily commitment that shapes our words, decisions, attitudes, and relationships. Your sport is one of the places God has given you an opportunity to live out your faith. Every practice is an opportunity to demonstrate integrity. Every difficult teammate is an opportunity to practice patience. Every victory is an opportunity for gratitude. Every disappointment is an opportunity to respond with humility and trust.

Before your next practice, workout, game, or competition, ask yourself:

“If someone knew nothing about Jesus except what they saw in my attitude and actions today, what would they learn about Him?”

Prayer

Father, thank You for the gifts, opportunities, and platforms You've given me. Help me remember that everything I do is an opportunity to represent You. Let my words reflect Your love, my actions demonstrate Your character, and my attitude honor You in both victory and defeat. Keep me humble, grateful, and intentional about living for Your glory, not my own. In Jesus' name, Amen.
