Choose Good – 1 Thessalonians 5:15

"See that no one repays anyone evil for evil, but always seek to do good to one another and to everyone." – 1 Thessalonians 5:15 ESV

There’s something deeply human about wanting to respond in kind. When we’re hurt, ignored, or wronged, retaliation feels justified—almost instinctive. But Paul calls the church to a different way. Not a passive way. Not a weak way. A purposeful way.

This verse doesn’t say avoid evil—it says don’t repay it. There’s a difference. You can acknowledge harm without mirroring it. You can confront wrong without becoming shaped by it. The call here is active: always seek to do good. That word “seek” implies intention, effort, and choice—especially when good feels undeserved.

Living this out reframes what strength looks like. Strength isn’t getting even; it’s refusing to let someone else’s sin dictate your response. It’s choosing obedience over impulse, faith over frustration. When we return good for evil, we reflect the heart of Christ—who absorbed injustice and answered with mercy.

This week, when you’re tempted to clap back, withdraw, or harden your heart, pause. Ask yourself: What response honors God, not just my feelings? Choosing good doesn’t erase the hurt—but it does keep your witness intact.

Prayer:

Lord, help me respond with grace when it would be easier to respond with resentment. Shape my reactions so they reflect Your love—to those close to me and to everyone. Amen.
