Built Different – 1 Corinthians 9:25

“Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last, but we do it to get a crown that will last forever.” — 1 Corinthians 9:25

Every athlete understands the cost of greatness. You sacrifice sleep, comfort, time, and relationships for the opportunity to accomplish something significant. You willingly submit yourself to discipline because you believe the reward is worth the sacrifice.

But here's a question worth wrestling with: Why are we willing to sacrifice so much for something temporary, yet struggle to surrender ourselves to Someone eternal?

In 1 Corinthians 9:25, Paul compares athletes competing for a perishable crown with believers pursuing an imperishable one. His point isn't that our accomplishments in this life are meaningless, but that we must recognize the difference between living for something temporary and living for something eternal.

Many of us have developed the discipline necessary to become successful athletes without developing the spiritual maturity necessary to become faithful disciples.

We deny ourselves certain foods to improve our performance but struggle to deny ourselves sinful desires. We submit to coaches who correct our mistakes and demand accountability, yet resist Scripture when it confronts how we're living.

The uncomfortable truth is that our lives often reveal what we value more clearly than our words do.

It's easy to say God comes first. It's much harder to live like He actually does.

Perhaps the greatest danger isn't that we've abandoned God altogether, but that we've learned how to include Him in our lives without allowing Him to lead them. We pray before games, post Scriptures after victories, and thank God when things go our way. But does that devotion remain when we're injured, overlooked, or asked to surrender something we desperately want? Have you surrendered your athletic career to Christ, or have you simply invited Christ to help you succeed in it?

Paul reminds us that discipline isn't just about what we're willing to do, but also what we're willing to give up for something greater. Following Jesus isn't about adding Christianity to our schedules. It's about allowing Christ to transform our priorities, desires, and purpose.

One day, the final whistle will blow. The crowds will disappear. The records will be broken. Someone else will wear your jersey. Who will you be when the thing you've spent years building your identity around is no longer there? Your athletic career has an expiration date. Your calling to follow Christ does not.

So train hard. Compete with excellence. Steward the gifts God has given you. But never become so consumed with building an athletic legacy that you neglect becoming the person God has called you to be.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for the gifts and opportunities You've given us as athletes. Help us pursue You with greater passion than we pursue temporary accomplishments. Teach us to practice spiritual discipline, remain faithful when nobody is watching, and remember that our ultimate reward is found in You. May our dedication to our sport never outweigh our devotion to You. In Jesus' name, Amen.
