What Do You See? – Proverbs 27:19

"As water reflects the face, so one's life reflects the heart" – Proverbs 27:19 NIV

As an athlete, it’s easy to focus on what everyone else can see. Your stats. Your physique. Your highlights. Your position on the depth chart. Your wins. We spend countless hours developing what shows up on the outside—but Proverbs 27:19 challenges us to look somewhere deeper: the heart.

Your life eventually reveals what’s happening inside of you. Pressure doesn't create what's in your heart as much as it exposes it:

  • A bad call can reveal your patience.
  • Losing can reveal your humility.
  • Sitting on the bench can reveal where you've placed your identity.
  • Success can reveal whether you want God's glory or your own.

How you treat teammates who can't do anything for you, how you respond when the coach isn't watching, and who you become when things don't go your way all say something about the condition of your heart.

That's why following Jesus is about more than looking like a Christian athlete. You can put a Bible verse in your bio, pray before games, point upward after scoring, and still have areas of your heart that you haven't surrendered to God. God isn't interested in the image you're able to maintain. He wants the person underneath it. Before asking God to improve your performance, your opportunities, or your platform, sometimes we need to ask Him to examine us.

So this week, don't only check your stats—check your heart. Ask yourself: What has my life been reflecting lately? Pride or humility? Comparison or contentment? Anger or grace? Self-glory or God's glory? You don't have to pretend the reflection is perfect. Bring what you see to Jesus and allow Him to keep transforming you from the inside out.

Because ultimately, your greatest testimony isn't the verse you wear. It's the life you live.

Prayer:

Father, examine my heart and show me the areas of my life that don't reflect You. Help me care more about who I'm becoming than how I appear to others. Replace my pride, comparison, selfishness, and frustration with a heart that looks more like Jesus. May the way I compete, lead, respond, and live point people back to You. In Jesus' name, Amen.
