Kingdom Mentality – Colossians 3:2

“Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth.” – Colossians 3:2 ESV

What motivates you?

What gets you out of bed every morning, gives you the strength to press on in hard times, and pushes you to be your best each day? Think about it—Is it a career? A personal goal? A relationship?

We are all driven by something. And while many pursuits can be good, not everything we chase can fill the space in our hearts meant for Jesus. This verse calls us to “set your minds on things that are above,” which means that everything we give our focus to should honor God. Even in our challenges, those moments can become opportunities for Him to reveal His power, deepen our trust, and work in ways we may not yet understand.

The truth is, how we think about and perceive life shapes our reality—and the reality is that God deeply cares for you. He wants you to align your life with His will, not just for your good, but for His glory. When our minds drift toward earthly concerns, we risk building our identity on what fades. But when our thoughts are anchored in eternity, our perspective shifts, and even the small things in life can be infused with purpose.

So, how can we practically apply this?

Start with self-reflection: Does what I’m doing align with Christ’s character and teachings? If it helps, write down the activities that fill your days and take a hard look at them. Too often, we get caught up in chasing success, recognition, or security, and forget to make the God of the universe our greatest pursuit—our true motivation.

Once you’ve reflected, find a verse or teaching that can serve as a foundation for each area of your life. Then, take it to God in prayer, asking Him to anchor your heart in Him. Be intentional about inviting Him into your decisions, even the seemingly small ones. Remember, God is more concerned with your “why” than your “what.” When your “why” is rooted in Christ, your “what” will naturally align with His will.

When our minds are fixed on God, we create space for Him to move, speak, and shape us. We begin to see setbacks as setups, and trials as opportunities to trust Him more. Turn your focus from the fleeting world to the forever Word, and you will find a motivation that no circumstance can take away.

Prayer

Lord, help me to set my mind on You above all else. When distractions and worldly pursuits call for my attention, remind me that my purpose is found in You alone. Align my “why” with Your will so that everything I do reflects Your glory. Give me wisdom to see what truly matters and courage to let go of what doesn’t. Fill my heart with a desire for eternal things, and teach me to treasure what lasts forever. Keep my mind steady, my spirit willing, and my focus on You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
