Coaches Need Christ: Spotlight on Coach Ramone

Welcome to the first post of 2:20 Vision’s new blog and video series, "Coaches Need Christ." In this series, we sit down with dedicated leaders in the sports community to explore how their faith intersects with their passion for coaching, mentoring, and developing the next generation.

For our first feature, we’re shining a spotlight on Coach Ramone (Coach Razor Ramone), a varsity defensive line coach at Midway High School and a proud product of Midway. Coach Ramone brings an unmatched level of intensity, purpose, and deep-rooted faith to the weight room and the gridiron.

From the Gridiron to the Coaching Ranks

Coach Ramone’s journey in sports started early. Having played high school football and a couple of years at the junior college level, he always knew his calling was on the sideline. When his former college position coach asked what he wanted to do next, Ramone didn't hesitate: "I want to be a football coach."

That path eventually led him to roles including a stint as a student assistant at the University of Central Arkansas before returning home to Midway. But coaching, for Ramone, goes far beyond Xs and Os. It is a divine calling.

"I've tried to run away from it many times, and God's led me back to this path... I believe God has called me to do this." — Coach Ramone

Coaching as a Platform to Impact Youth

For Coach Ramone, the platform of sports is something that should never be taken for granted. In a world where young athletes face countless struggles—mentally, emotionally, and socially—coaches often serve as the primary source of structure and stability in a young person's life.

Coach Ramone emphasizes that many student-athletes may not come from a background with a strong foundation or structure at home. That’s why his mission is to show up, be an example, and point them toward a bigger picture.

  • Be the Example: Coaches must strive to be the standard, showing up authentically and pouring everything they have into young men and women.

  • Guide Through the Struggle: When athletes are battling life challenges, coaches have the opportunity to step in as a support system and community.

  • Lead to the Ultimate Finisher: Ramone reminds us that God is the author and finisher of our faith. By steering individuals toward that path, coaches can help athletes see their true potential.

The Heart Behind the Intensity

If you step into the weight room or onto the field with Coach Ramone, you immediately feel his high energy and intensity. But that intensity isn't for show—it comes from a place of genuine passion for his players and deep conviction in his faith.

"When I'm coaching... you're going to feel my intensity, you're going to feel my energy. I want you to know that I'm here, and my presence is felt, because I want you to be excited to be here." — Coach Ramone

Key Takeaways for Young Coaches:

  1. Give Your All: Never be afraid to pour everything you have into the people who have the potential to become the best versions of themselves.

  2. Embrace the Role: View coaching as a ministry and a platform to impact lives far beyond the sport.

  3. Stay Rooted in Faith: Remember that true leadership is anchored in walking out your faith authentically so others can see a positive, lasting example.
